What a PR Strategy in Ghana Should Include

A PR strategy should explain what your organisation needs to achieve, whose understanding or behaviour matters, and how communication will help, before publicity begins.

A PR strategy should explain what your organisation needs to achieve, whose understanding or behaviour matters, and how communication will help. It should define the message, evidence, channels, responsibilities and measures before publicity begins.

For a business, cultural organisation or public figure in Ghana, the first question is what people need to understand or do. That answer gives an interview, announcement or social campaign a purpose.

At PR369 Communications, we begin every engagement with a strategy conversation. These are the decisions we recommend resolving before commissioning activity.

Define the Outcome

Be specific about the objective or the change you want. A training programme may need suitable applicants. A new brand may need prospective customers to understand a product. An established organisation may need partners to trust a change in direction.

Choose a measure you can observe. If the goal is applications, record completed applications and their suitability. Coverage and reach can help explain how people encountered the programme, but they cannot answer that question on their own.

Identify the people whose decisions matter

An audience description should help you choose a message and a channel. "Young people in Ghana" for example, is usually too broad to guide either.

Consider a hypothetical arts training programme seeking school leavers in Accra. Prospective students need information about eligibility, dates and opportunity. Parents may need clarity on costs and safety. Institutional partners may want evidence about the programme's management. These groups affect the same outcome but require different information.

Ask where each group already gets information and whom it trusts. Select channels around that evidence and the resources available.

Establish the message and its proof

Write a plain explanation of what you offer, who it is for and why it matters. Support it with evidence you can substantiate: completed work, a programme outline, relevant qualifications or a properly attributed testimonial.

Build a short message guide for everyone speaking on behalf of the organisation. It should include the main explanation, supporting facts, likely questions and an agreed response to sensitive issues. Resolve inconsistent dates, claims or eligibility details before they enter campaign materials.

Give each channel a job

Media relations can introduce a story to relevant audiences. Your website can provide the full explanation. Social content can demonstrate the work and answer recurring questions. Email can help interested people take the next step.

Describe how these parts connect. If an interview invites people to register, the registration page must be ready and the team must know how to respond to enquiries. The campaign loses value when people arrive interested and cannot find reliable information.

Editorial coverage remains the publisher's decision. Treat paid media placements separately and be clear about what the budget purchases.

Agree the scope and working arrangements

Ask what the engagement will deliver. A strategy may include audience priorities, positioning, a campaign sequence, a channel plan and a measurement framework. Execution could include media pitching, content production, social management or stakeholder communications, depending on the agreed brief.

Confirm the agency fee, third-party costs and the client's responsibilities. Identify who supplies facts, approves materials and speaks to the media. Agree deadlines for those decisions, especially where several organisations must approve the same announcement.

Report against the objective

Our Women of Valour case study reports 3,550 registrations against a target of 1,200 for the 2023 event. The comparison is useful because the outcome and target are explicit. It does not establish that one channel caused every registration.

Use the same discipline in your plan. Set a baseline, identify the source of each measure and review what the evidence can actually tell you. Where attribution is incomplete, say so.

When to involve a communications agency

Bring an agency in while important decisions can still change. There is more room to resolve positioning, strengthen evidence and coordinate partners before announcements and production dates are fixed.
