PR, Advertising and Social Media Explained for Business Owners

PR, Advertising and Social Media Explained for Business Owners

PR earns attention through other people, advertising buys it, and social media builds a direct relationship. Here is what each can do for a business and how they work together.

Public relations earns attention and credibility through other people, such as journalists, partners and communities. Advertising buys a guaranteed placement for a message you control. Social media gives a business its own channel to build a relationship with an audience over time. Most campaigns need some combination of the three.

For business owners in Ghana deciding where to put a limited budget, the useful question is what each discipline can realistically do for the objective in front of them.

What PR does

PR manages how an organisation is understood by the people who matter to it. That includes media relations, but also stakeholder communication, reputation management, issues response and the messages a spokesperson uses.

Media relations can introduce a story to relevant audiences through a trusted third party. The trade-off is control. Editorial coverage remains the publisher's decision. A journalist may not run the story, may run it later than planned or may include a perspective you did not expect.

PR is useful when credibility matters more than repetition: a new organisation explaining itself, a business addressing a concern or a founder building a public profile around real work.

What advertising does

Advertising buys space or time: a radio slot, a billboard, a newspaper page, a sponsored post or a search result. You control the message, the placement and, within the limits of the medium, the timing.

That control makes advertising useful for announcements with a fixed date, offers, product launches and messages that need repetition. Its limitation is trust. People know an advert is paid for, so it works best when the claim is clear and supported elsewhere.

Our out-of-home campaign work for MONT Water and Empowerment Worship Centre covered strategy, creative coordination, media buying with Alliance Media and DDP Outdoor, monitoring and reporting. Each of those stages is part of what an advertising budget pays for.

What social media does

Social media is both a channel you own and a place where paid advertising runs. Organic social content lets a business show its work, answer recurring questions and stay present between campaigns. Paid social uses the platforms' targeting to put content in front of selected audiences.

Social media rewards consistency and relevance. It also needs someone to respond to comments and messages. A busy account that leaves questions unanswered can do more harm than a quiet one.

How they work together

The disciplines are strongest when each has a defined job. Consider a hypothetical product launch:

  • PR introduces the product and the people behind it through interviews and relevant coverage
  • Advertising makes sure the launch date and the offer reach people repeatedly
  • Social media demonstrates the product, answers questions and gives interested people a place to follow up

All three should point to the same reliable information. If an interview sends people to a website that is not ready, the campaign loses value.

Choosing where to start

Start with the objective and the audience, not the channel. Ask:

  1. Does the audience need to trust us before they act? PR may lead.
  2. Do they need to hear a clear message repeatedly before a deadline? Advertising may lead.
  3. Do we need an ongoing relationship and a place to answer questions? Social media may lead.

A small budget is usually better spent doing one or two of these well than spreading thinly across all three.
